“Integrated Risk Management of Rock Slopes"
By: Jean Hutchinson, PhD, P.Eng, Associate Professor, Dept. of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering, Queen's University
Abstract
This talk, originally given as a keynote lecture at the CanUS Rock Mechanics Symposium in June 2009, discusses the variety of innovative and new approaches to assessing rock slope instability issues. Designed around the elements of a risk decision making framework, the talk explores issues of slope instability detection, assessment and the potential protection solutions. Conclusions from the talk are that rock slope instability can be managed more effectively through development and analysis of ‘educated’ failure databases as a basis for understanding, application of rapidly evolving instrumentation and monitoring tools, application of increasingly advanced numerical simulation tools, and broader application of decision support logic and risk based decision making.
Bio
Jean Hutchinson is a Geological Engineer by training, completing a B.A.Sc. in GeoEngineering at University of Toronto in 1984, a M.A.Sc. in Geotechnical Engineering at University of Alberta in 1988, and a Ph.D. in Rock Engineering at University of Toronto in 1992. Jean has worked as a Trainee Engineer with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation; as a Research Engineer, jointly funded by CSIRO in Australia and the Mining Research Directorate in Canada; as a Rock Mechanics Specialist with Klohn-Crippen Consultants in Sudbury, Ontario; as an Assistant Professor in Geological Engineering at the University of Waterloo; and is now Head of Department for Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering at Queen’s University.
Jean’s research interests are diverse, and include risk assessment of railway ground hazards; landslide monitoring, assessment and stability management; engineering geology risk assessment; ground subsidence risk management; and susceptibility mapping as applied to a variety of slope hazards.
