Source Water Protection in Ontario and Barbados

By: Mike Hulley, PhD, P.Eng.,Associate Professor, Civil Engineering, Royal Military College

ABSTRACT

The presentation will examine the history of source water protection in Ontario and will provide a few recent examples, with particular attention to protection of municipal groundwater supplies.  The discussion provides a consulting engineers perspective and highlights some of the challenges associated with working with provincial agencies and a constantly changing set of rules.  By contrast, an example source water protection project in Barbados is presented.  In terms of numerical models and general approach, the Ontario and Barbados examples are remarkably similar, however, administratively, source water protection in Ontario and Barbados are worlds apart.  The comparison provides some interesting food for thought and may help to answer the question: Is Ontario’s source water protection program a success?
