2. BACKGROUND

a. Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to introduce students to various specialized topics in GeoEngineering and Applied Geoscience, without needing to undertake a course wholly dedicated to that topic. Another aim is to extend interactions between students and staff in the departments contributing to the collaborative graduate program, and to provide a vehicle whereby visiting faculty or technical experts can more easily contribute to graduate education at Queen’s and RMC.

b. Course Emphasis

Course modules are similar to ‘short courses’ designed for practicing engineers, providing introductory coverage of new or evolving areas of GeoEngineering, including the application of new research findings of relevance to engineering practice.

c. Calendar Description

A course unit is composed of two modules on various topics in GeoEngineering and Applied Geoscience. Each module will consist of a workshop or short course as approved by the GeoEngineering Graduate Coordinator. The unit will be completed within two years. Specific modules to be available during each academic year are normally announced in September or, in exceptional circumstances, as opportunities arise. I.D.Moore

3. OUTLINE OF POTENTIAL TOPICS (AND INSTRUCTORS)

i. Analysis and design of buried pipes and culverts (Moore, Brachman)
ii. Behaviour and design of barriers for landfills (Rowe, Brachman)
iii. Fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems Technology for Urban Infrastructure Renewal (Harrap)
iv. Trenchless pipe installation and rehabilitation (Moore)
v. Behaviour and design of reinforced soil segmental retaining wall structures (Bathurst)
vi. Use of finite element analysis in geotechnical design (Diederichs, Moore)
vii. Geotechnical Instrumentation (Take)
viii. Digital image analysis of deformations in geomaterials (Take)

4. ASSESSMENT

Modules include coursework or written examinations to assess student knowledge and understanding. This is added to short courses where they were designed for practicing engineers and did not already include assessment.

5. OTHER DETAILS

GENG 842 is available to doctoral students who have already taken GENG 841 (provided six or more graduate courses are required for their program).
