2. BACKGROUND
A. Course Objective
The objective of this course is to expose GeoEngineering students to the different areas of GeoEngineering research and practice, providing a shared learning experience to link students from each of the departments participating in the Collaborative Graduate Program in GeoEngineering. An additional objective is to provide opportunities to develop and refine presentation skills, the ability to give and receive constructive criticism, and to pose and respond to questions.
B. Course Emphasis
The course emphasises the broad scope and interdisciplinary nature of GeoEngineering research and practice, through the preparation, delivery and audience participation in oral presentations.
C. Calendar Description
Illustrate all areas of GeoEngineering research and practice; emphasis on breadth and interdisciplinary aspects; preparation, delivery and audience participation in oral presentations; the course links students from departments participating in the Collaborative Graduate Program in GeoEngineering; opportunities are provided to develop and refine presentation skills, to give and receive constructive criticism, and to pose and respond to questions. Instructors: GeoEngineering faculty, Invited lecturers.
3. SEMINAR SCHEDULE AND TOPIC SELECTION
A. Twelve to sixteen seminar hours will be held each term.
B. Seminar sessions are composed of presentations for one hour by an invited guest, and 20 to 30 minute presentations by graduate students. Each year, each student registered in the course delivers one presentation in an area of GeoEngineering or Applied GeoScience chosen by the student. While most invited speakers present seminars in the general area of GeoEngineering, some presentations cover other related topics.
4. COURSE EVALUATION
Attendance at seminars Pass/Fail
Note: Except with special permission, students must attend all but one of the seminar sessions each term. Masters students enrol in the course for two terms, and doctoral students for four terms. The course runs each Fall and Winter term.
